A Daily Dose of History-“the Little Rock Nine”

In the fall of 1957, seventeen black applicants were admitted into Little Rock’s all-white Central High School. Eight chose to remain at their current high school, but the other nine decided to become the first black students to integrate the school. They came to be known as “the Little Rock Nine.”
Then Governor Orval Faubus was a staunch segregationist, and even though the Little Rock School Board had voted unanimously in 1955 to begin integrating the high schools in 1957, he was determined to prevent the integration. Claiming that he was acting to prevent rioting and violence, on September 2, 1957, over the objection of Little Rock’s mayor Woodrow Mann, the Governor ordered elements of the Arkansas National Guard to surround Central High School and prevent the black students from entering. The National Guard stayed in place until a federal judge ruled on September 20 that the governor was using them illegally, forcing him to recall the troops.
On September 23 there were violent confrontations between a segregationist mob, the black students, and the Little Rock Police Department, which was now responsible for the students’ safety. That night Mayor Mann sent a telegram to President Eisenhower, asking him to send federal troops to maintain order and to protect the integration process. On the following day, Eisenhower ordered 1,200 soldiers of the 101st Airborne deployed to Little Rock. He also federalized the Arkansas National Guard and deployed it around Central High School, with orders exactly opposite those they had been given by Governor Faubus. Ironically, the troops that the governor had intended to use to prevent integration of Central Hight School ended up being among those who facilitated it.
President Eisenhower sent federal troops to Little Rock and federalized the entire Arkansas National Guard on September 24, 1957, sixty-five years ago today.
