considered "land" as far as UNCLOS is concerned. So yes, land controls the sea, not the other way around, so if we are going strictly by UNCLOS rules and not historical claims, it would be the various countries' EEZ (as determined by their coastlines) which controls most of the Spratly claims (which are essentially almost all sea). IIRC he said that there are only 2 islands in the SCS which are actually considered legit islands by UNCLOS definitions and those are the only ones which could be used as part of territorial and EEZ claims.
