In a statement on Tuesday following the meeting in Kunming, southern China, foreign ministers from the Association of Southeast Asian Nations expressed concern over developments that had “eroded trust and confidence”.
They also stressed the importance of freedom of navigation and overflight of the South China Sea, and said disputes should be resolved in accordance with international law.
But hours later Malaysia’s foreign ministry said the statement had been retracted, without giving further explanation. The group has not issued an amended statement.
