Jiuquan is actually very close to Jiayuguan, which is a popular tourist destination (been there twice). You can actually see the space launch center from the Lanzhou to Jiayuguan rail line. Jiuquan is famous in Chinese history and means "Wine Spring". After General Huo Qubing defeated the Huns, Emperor Han Wudi sent him some fine wine to celebrate the victory. Being unselfish, he poured the wine down a well to share with his troops, hence the name. Also, the town is next to Wuwei, another place named after Huo's exploits and reputed birthplace of Kublai Khan.
