The next person to assume the mantle of Doctor Who will be a woman.
According to the BBC, the 13th version of Doctor Who will be played by Jodie Whittaker.
Known for her roles on Broadchurch and Attack The Block, Whittaker said she's “beyond excited to begin this epic journey” as the next Doctor.
"It's more than an honour to play the Doctor. It means remembering everyone I used to be, while stepping forward to embrace everything the Doctor stands for: hope. I can't wait,” Whittaker told the BBC.
Doctor Who is a British science-fiction series centered around an alien known as the Time Lord who explores the universe in a time traveling space shift, known as TARDIS. The show has developed a cult following since his premiere in 1963.
There have been 12 male actors who have portrayed the Doctor. The series' current Doctor is portrayed by Peter Capaldi.
Whittaker will be Doctor Who's first female Doctor.
