Communication wasn't as difficult as you make it out to be. Soon after the Opium Wars Chinese were domestically producing opium to the extent that people were starving to death because farmers would rather plant profitable poppies than edible corn. Those poppy seeds had to have come from somewhere (and not from the British, it wasn't in their interest to have local production undercut their imports).
