The AMerican Empire and the pernicous effects of the US mass media date back to this time. Trumped-up tales of Spanish atrocities in Cuba were used by the media to goad the population into supporting war against Spain (and subsequent annexation of Spanish territories in the Caribbean and Pacific). The media magnate Hearst sent Frederic Remington, the noted artist, to Cuba to illustrate the war there. Remington arrived in Cuba and reported to Hearst that there was no war going on. Hearst told him, "You provide the pictures and I'll provide the war." The US has subsequently tended to use similar tactics to provide popular justification for military interventions. The use of the media to stir outrage about alleged human rights violations (often fabricated), the setting-up of heroic figures like the Dalai Lama and Joshua Wong and "President" Guaido for the masses to identify with - these should all be quite familiar to you. The only curious thing these days is that these media tactics are being used domestically and persons such as Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez are set up as the media heroes.
