China's GDP catching up with US is only a matter of when, and math. As a matter of fact China's GDP has more than doubled in the last decade from 2010 to 2019. A think tank estimated the catch up has hastened to 2028 due to how each country handle the pandemic, thanks to Trump. A GDP the size of the US means China defence budget relative to US would rise from current 26% to around 50%, considering China only spend under 2% GDP in military compared to 3-4% GDP of the US. Some would point to per capita, which China has overtaken the likes of Brazil, but when China reach only half of the US per capita, China's GDP would be equivalent to US, EU, Japan combined. China planned to reach basic modernization by 2035, and modernization by 2050, so stay healthy, hang around to witness it.
