Once I saw that listing, like yourself, we thought, what about Huawei? They should be working at least in a couple of areas.
Looking at the whole list, it was quite shocking.
This is what Huawei is involved with, in some form or another, in depth or have some connection to that area of expertise.
Advanced Computing
Huawei has their server farmer products which are second best in the world, that they are selling to a few clients, that is the edge computing for the 5G network.
Advanced Engineering Materials
It was that hinge for their fold-able cell phone. They got it right. They probably had some new materials for their network gear somewhere. Although not the main thrust of their business, still they have a stake in it.
Advanced Manufacturing
Smart manufacturing should be one of those new business Huawei was opening up.
Artificial Intelligence (AI)
Huawei is doing this AI too.
Autonomous Systems and Robotics
The 5G automates the factories, which Huawei opened a new business.
Communication and Networking Technologies
This would be the core business for Huawei.
Renewable Energy Generation and Storage
Huawei is a leader with the solar inverter.
Semiconductors and Microelectronics
Huawei just opened a semiconductor fab recently apparently to fab their own chips.
That is a lot!
That is 8 areas where Huawei has involvement with, not research, but selling products and services.
Some areas like gas turbine engines, biotech, lasers, hypersonics, nuclear, and space exploration, Huawei has nothing to do with that.
In those areas Huawei is not present, there are other Chinese players who have a foothold in it.
It is not just they got a foot in the door, in many cases they are already either selling a product, or it is deployed, like the hypersonic weapon.
Although I agree that there is no point for China to alienate its trade partners, at the same time, this seems it has gone too far down that road.
We cannot stop progress. If a lot of it happens in China, then that is good.
