E stands for export usually, but some export versions that are expressly tailored to the needs of a specific air force get their own letter or letters. For example, K-8P is the Pakistani version of K-8, F-7NG is the Nigerian version of J-7, and F-7NM is the Namibian version of J-7. But some cases are less straightforward, F-7M Airguard was an export version of J-7 but the version sold to Bangladesh was called F-7MB and the version sold to Iran was F-7N. The same holds for ships, the version of 053H3 sold to Thailand was called 053HT but the version of 071 for Thailand is called 071E not 071T! Very confusing.
